Why is exercise so good for you?  by Lucy Gilroy

I wonder if you have made New Years Resolutions? Eat less sugar? See friends more? Exercise regularly? When it comes to exercise there are of course so many benefits…. helps you to shed a few pounds…. helps to tone up those flabby bits… but did you know that what you choose to do and where you do it can have a really beneficial impact on your mood, motivation and stress levels.
When we exercise ( I prefer to call it “do activity”) the millions of brain cells we all have get very excited and start to make connections and as those connections are happening a wonderful chemical is generated called serotonin. Serotonin is at the top of the food chain when it comes to chemicals released in the brain. It makes us brave, happy, coping, relaxed little soles and moreover it even helps with physical pain which is why often we forget about that little niggle in the leg or tummy ache when we are having fun running around! The important thing though is to do exercise (or activities) that you enjoy. This makes sense doesn’t it because if we are miserable when we exercise we are less likely to be in the part of the brain that can generate serotonin. For some, three sessions a week at the gym is great fun, for others a long march with the dogs or perhaps it’s just kicking a ball around the park with the children. Choose do do what you enjoy! Perhaps you don’t yet know what you enjoy so it’s a great opportunity to try new things. This has a double benefit. Firstly, the benefit of the activity itself releases serotonin. Secondly, when we try something new, especially if it’s a little challenging, our brain cells start to make new connections and in so doing release more serotonin. You can’t lose here! So go on… have a go at something new and see if you enjoy it! If you don’t, try something else. But remember it can be awkward for the brain cells to make new connections so give them a good chance! Finally, the scientists are telling us more and more that when we get outside amongst nature it is good for our brains. So get out there, do your thing and if you can do it with friends… even better.

Have fun and happy new year!
