Can hypnotherapy work online?
Well this was the question I asked myself! So, we had no choice but to dip our toe’s in the online ocean and have a go. The solution focused hypnotherapist after all, would never be put off by the challenge of adapting to a new way of working. So we engaged our prefrontal cortex’s and set about wondering how we would change the way we work. We wanted to continue to provide our excellent services to help our clients make positive changes in their lives.
Have we changed the way we work?
Well, the biggest surprise is that we haven’t really changed the way we work! Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy after all and we can talk online! We can talk and our clients can talk back to us. Before each new client starts a course of therapy we establish their preferred platform, such as Zoom or FaceTime. We ensure that they have put aside private time & a private space at their home for the hour.
Then there is the hypnosis. Perhaps our biggest surprise is how well this works online. All the client needs is their own bed or comfy chair and a place to set up their computer or phone so that they can hear the therapist. The therapist encourages the deepening of the relaxation, and provides the positive suggestions in just the same way as in clinic. At the end of the therapy session, the client is asked to open their eyes and sit up ready to say goodbye until next time!
Is it the same for children?
Evy & Maddy, who work with many of our younger clients are really pleased with how hypnotherapy is working online for children. They have noticed that some of the primary aged children benefit if the session is a little shorter but they are able to do good work with games, art and storytelling, despite not seeing each other in person. Older children are enjoying the full hour online in the same way as our adult clients.
Is it safe to work online?
We have been mindful to put in place some additional privacy standards to make online working as safe as possible, particularly with regards to working with our younger clients. These include always ensuring an adult accepts and closes the call and using the parent’s device rather than the child’s. Of course, the therapist is working from a private space at home too.
What are your clients saying about working online?
This is what one of our clients said about working online:
“I was a little nervous as to whether I would be able to connect with Lucy in the same way if I wasn’t in the room with her – but I really enjoy our work online just as much now. They are really relaxed and fun too. I am continuing to make really good progress with her & I can see myself choosing to do online sessions in the future instead of coming into the clinic now as I was travelling from quite far away!”
